For a lifelong fan of Bill Oddie's music this really is the treat of treats. And yes, it has been lifelong since I inherited my dad's copy of Father Christmas Do Not Touch Me as a 10-year old. Fans' declarations of "we've been waiting years for something like this" aren't overstated. We really have been waiting years for the series sessions to be released in any format. Somehow 4 albums and 5 singles of killer music just isn't enough. And if it wasn't entirely plain how seriously Bill takes writing and recording by listening to at least the first three of those albums, then this boxset may have you taken aback. Bearing in mind most of these songs were only soundtracks to one episode, which itself would have had the promise of being broadcast just once, the quality of craft is superb.Standouts are Fun Palace, Travelling Theme, Changed, Kitten Kong (the track I've most waited for laughter + SFX free); disc 2 in its entirety as it gives the best overview of Bill's musical genius with Bad Bad Lot, Spacehopper, and A Woman's Work being picks; Big Brave Bold Hunka Man, Crazy Man, Front Page News, and Shiny Shoes. Finally Bonecrusher, probably the hardest groove I've ever heard, may well be my favourite on this set. This really has to be experienced to be believed. Bill and co stomp out what is likely the first funk metal recording ever all while his lyrics, with their masochistic bent, provide an insane hook. "Justified aggression, pornographic pain..." And all for a silly black pudding sequence and Ecky Thump. The only truly bad thing I can force myself to say about this collection is that there isn't more of it. But I realise that may not be possible. Sure, I'd love an extended 5/6 minute "Kitten Kong", an unedited "Taking You Back", and the original version of "Ride My Pony", but I know when to be happy with what I've got. The tracks mixed in stereo would also be nice but the multitracks are probably long gone by now and the mono cuts are more authentic and true to original presentation.MEGA thanks to Adrian Bishop-Laggett for saving these from the BBC and allowing this body of work to be appreciated!
