Notes

On black vinyl, this is the first issue of this legendary and much reproduced LP and 7" EP.
In keeping with most later editions it has a black, glossy laminated sleeve.
On the rear of the sleeve, the laminate falls short of the edge on all sides, except the spine (by about 2mm.)
On the front of the sleeve, the laminate only falls short on the right hand side opening.
All 500 copies of this sleeve came with this defect.
Also, characteristic of this first issue sleeve is a small 1 mm. circular print fault not on any other later editions, see image.
Other noticeable differences, when compared with later editions, include: different ridge widths on the labels of both LP and 7".
On the LP, the outermost ridge extends all the way to the edge of the label.
Also, the titles printed on the label intersect with the ridges at different positions to those seen on later editions.
This copy also has very short run-off grooves, matrix numbers in small letters and "Warsaw" printed on the spine of the sleeve.
A1 to B5 were recorded for a first album scheduled to be released on RCA Records, but which never saw the light of day.
C1 to D2 feature their first Peel session, recorded 31st of January 1979.
C1 miss-named and given as "Excite One" on the label.

I was delighted to find this listing and the notes, which match a copy (with 7") that I have, but I am not sure that this is in fact the first, albeit unofficial, release of the RCA and Peel Sessions. The semi-official Joy Division site states: 'The Original Warsaw bootleg, there have been many copies of this over the years. British bootleg. Black vinyl with free black vinyl 7". Black and white glossy sleeve. "Warsaw" on spine. Wide run-off grooves and the matrix number in LARGE letters. Has RZM 200A/B on the left of the label ...' See: http://www.joydiv.org/w2lp.htm Also, I have seen very recent pressings from last year (2011) or 2010 which have the RZM 200 (or 100 if 7") on the labels, so it is now practically impossible to know if you have an original c.1981 pressing. I think the version listed here is the first US copy of the original 1981 version, borne out by the US-style paper inner sleeve with the larger rounded edges. Still nice and early though, probably late 1981, the UK version being pressed/released in about May, the same time as the 'The Ideal Beginning' 7" and 12", released at the behest of the late Rob Gretton to mark the first anniversary of Ian Curtis' suicide.
