Phobism
I'm an Aqua fan, but didn't know they had reunited and produced "Megalomania" until recently, as it wasn't released in the United States. If you're expecting more 90s Eurodance silliness, be prepared for a shock."Megalomania" is basically a stylistic parody of circa 2010 (modern at the time) dance pop. As I listened to each song, I thought "that's a Britney Spears song", "that's a Black Eyed Peas song", etc. As for the lyrics, there's still silliness, but in the period since "Aquarium" and "Aquarius", they've completely forgotten how subtlety works. Instead of subtle sexual innuendo, it's now explicit sexual raunchiness. Very few of the album's songs are radio-friendly; "Happy Boys and Girls" from their first album would be considered a children's lullaby by comparison. In a way, they're continuing their tradition of "pop + dance + shock value", just updated for the times.Despite the about-face from their previous albums, the melodies and lyrics are memorable, Lene's lead vocals are just as recognizable as before, and each song is an instant earworm. The album as a whole has quickly become one of my favorites, and "No Party Patrol", "Playmate to Jesus", "Dirty Little Pop Song" and "Sucker for a Superstar" stand out for me.

This album is simply incredible. It's Aqua with a more modern sound, and they sound fantastic. Amazing from start to finish!

It’s been a long time since Aqua released anything and, although I really liked the first two albums, I wasn’t sure whether the band would still be able to deliver anything good after all this time. It turns out I needn’t have worried! On “Megalomania” Aqua deliver an excellent collection of new songs. The sound has been updated, and their cheekiness is now outright raunchiness, but Aqua manage to trump their former albums here. The great melodies are still there in songs like “Playmate To Jesus”, “No Party Patrol”, and “Sucker For A Superstar” as well as the clever lyrical word play on songs like “If The World Didn’t Suck (We Would All Fall Off)”. However, the cuteness that used to hide the underlying innuendoes of songs like “Barbie Girl” are gone and have been replaced by outright X-rated language. I’ve got no problems with bands dropping the “F bomb”, and worse, lyrically but sadly it means I can’t play this album in front of the kids. Oh well, until they grow up a bit this album will remain in heavy rotation on my “don’t play in front of the kids” playlist!A very, very good return from Aqua.
