Afro Baby, a welcome collection of material from the 60s and 70s, provides not only pure listening pleasure, but proves there was much more to the West African soul/funk movement than Fela’s Afro-beat. For this particular feast, compiler Miles Cleret has done a superb job of laying out the table with tasty surprises including: ‘Afro Baby’ by Stephen Osita Amaechi & his Afro-Rhythm-Skies, the punchy reggae-ish horns and clean disco scratch guitars of Fred Fisher’s ‘Asa-sa’, and the sax exuberance and raw energy at the heart of ‘Ochonma’ by the Martin Brothers Dance Band.
