Junior Byles indubitably one the greatest and most soulful singers ever recorded in Jamaica has the starling gift of making those who listen to him feel the same emotions that the registers so brilliantly in is songs. The effect may occasionally transport listeners to places where they would rather not go, but nonetheless it is ultimately a fulfilling experience. In an age when so much popular music seems vapid and superficial vocalists like Byles are few and far between.This collection gathers together titles Junior cut for Lee "Scratch" Perry and Winston 'Niney' Holness aka The Observer. The liner notes to Juniors previous Trojan compilations "Beat Down Babylon: The Upsetter Years" Attempt to document his career and record history: this present dise will hopefully fill in a few crucial gaps in even the most obsessive Byles collection.Included here are tracks like the wicked Byles version of the Little Willie John Standard "Fever" Junior version of the Delroy Wilson smash "Better Must Come" which retitled gives this set its name as well as well Known " Curley Locks" a record which very nearly gave Junion UK popehart sucess in 1975. Also present are cuts like the stark "Long Way" and the vituperative "Thanks We Get" with Perry's son Omar also in session!Side two showcases the production talents of Winston 'Niney' Holness a man admirably suited to bring out the best in a strong 'Heart' singer like Byles Highlights include the superb "Bur-O-Boy" in which Junior mourns the loss of a friend in the ghetto violence which has periodically swept through Kingston and the great rockers re-cut of Roy Cousins "Pick Up The Pieces" rhythm here entitled "Can You Feel It?" For good measure we have included the stepping version to the aforementioned track, as well as the dub to Juniors vocal re-cut of the old Delroy Wilson tune "Run Run" On "What Kind Of World" Junior offers us a glimpse into his mind that is almost unbearably painful to bear, as he comments on the then current state of the world in anguished fashion over a heavy doom-laden Observer rhythm. This track was originally cut by Junior for Lee Perry around 1970/1. but is a jaunty affair when compared to the later "Niney" cut.The music of such committed singers as Byles (and others) is unfortunately not in fashion at present: however when someone has something to say which is this moving and powerful then there is no way that they will be denied, as we believe this compilation testifies.
