In the back of cover you can read: "An able compromise between the counterpoint of Strauss, the harmony of Debussy, and the orchestration of Rimsky-Korsakov-the whole tinted with a little Italian melody".
While no one could reasonably deny the accuracy of that burst of shelling from the french writer Pruniéres, one could reasonably reply that Respighi knew how to make his compromise very agreable.
Both The Fountains of Rome and The Pines of Rome abound in splendid light and shade.The Fountains were composed in 1916 as an impression of four Roman fountains of the baroque period and is laid out in four movements: one movement, one fountain.
The Pines of Rome was composed eight years later.It is laid out similarly in four connected movements and is still more richly orchestrated, the presence being required of six Roman bugles and a grammophone record of a nightingale singing.
