Cannon was born May 5, 1934 in Grenada MS and at age two his family moved to Memphis. His father played guitar with musical groups in night clubs. Cannon began playing the sax at age 10 and played in school bands until he graduated from Memphis Technical HS in 1952. He entered Memphis State University to major in music, later dropped out to earn a living and played with different combos in clubs until he joined the touring combo in 1959. When "Tuff" hit big, it shot him to national popularity.
