My copy of this pressing peaks quite a bit, has anybody else noticed something similar?

Sounds too good to be true. Mastered by Kevin Gray. Pressed at RTI. Original mono mix. Somebody tell me this sounds good?
Mataxe
Had no idea it's been reissued, let alone Gray mastered it. Did see a mono reissue of it earlier today, hence why I'm here. It was done by Jackpot Records - some outfit out in Portland, OR

Can I assume the sound quality of this is better than the Rhino reissue?Appreciate if anyone who owns this can comment on sound quality.
The_NiGGa
Yes you can, it's an amazing remaster and a great pressing, but I was unlucky to get a copy with a nasty scratch mark on B1, hope it's just this copy and not others as well.

Listened to it three times so far. Packaging is top notch, identical to original with laminated cover and lined inner sleeve. The sound quality is fantastic, the separation of all of the sounds laced throughout literally come to life with a lot of depth unheard before. Kevin Gray nailed this one! Highly Recommended!
Pumpit
Just picked it up today. They aced the cover and pressing, will listen to later and post my thoughts tomorrow, looking forward to this one!

Speaking of lyrics: In the foldout of my Euro CD copy there are lyrics "[t]ranscribed by Peter Serafin". But the 'transcription' is utterly clueless-- entire lines and verses left out, many words and phrases obviously misheard. It's as if the transcriber was not familiar with New Orleans terminology, was listening to the album on a cheap little speaker on the other side of the room, and wasn't really paying close attention anyway. (This is also true of the 'lyrics' provided with the Virgin CD of Gong's "Shamal".) If you're going to attempt a lyric sheet, why even bother if you don't care about getting it RIGHT?

I like to imagine some hippie-type individuals in 1968-- young people unfamiliar with New Orleans culture and music (and 'ethnic' music in general)-- picking up this LP in a local record store/head shop and looking at the cover: " 'The Night Tripper'? Hey, cool, man!" They go home that night, and after dropping half a tab of acid and firing up a healthy spliff, they put the album on the stereo. Suddenly... "Man, what kinda trip IS this? I don't understand it, but it's, like, far out!" Question: On the two copies I've heard-- an early Atco U.S. LP and a European CD-- there's a third verse to "Mama Roux", but the Doctor's lead vocal is mixed way down and can barely be heard above the female vocalists singing "Chicka-chicka, chicka-chick-ahh." It's as if he were singing something that had to be censored out. Anyone know the words to that third verse?

hahahahahahaha, I found this record in shanghai last year, I know cause I took a picture of it and facebook reminded it to me this morning. I didn't buy it but only took the picture because my name's John and "the night tripper" thing looked kinda cool to me. I'm actually in a wierd mood, 8am high on K, alone in the darkness of my room, got notified by facebook as mentionned previously, and decided to listen to it... "Man, what kinda trip IS this? I don't understand it, but it's, like, far out!"

Are the pictures on this release correct?? It doesn't seem so!! I thought the variants with the Night Stripper label misprint were from about 2005 or so. Can anyone with knowledge on the pressings of this album please confirm. Thanks
Andronrad
As mentioned on reddit, the label has a funny misspelling: "The Night Stripper", instead of "The Night Tripper". Check it out!

Would you say this is a high quality sounding reissue? Is it analog?
Anarus
I have this UK first and the mastering is odd. Female backing vocals and percussion sound distant - like fake stereo. Also have two tracks on a US Atco comp that sound so much fuller and punchier.
CopamHuk
Yes, this UK issue is really weak compared to US pressings. Avoid if you can.
Tygrarad
I can't vouch for other vinyl pressings, but this one sounds marvellous. I love it. That extraordinary atmosphere evoked by the near-perfect album cover comes through, well and truly.
Anaginn
I have a copy of this on normal black vinyl, not yellow. It has the usual mustard yellow ATCO label. I suspect the word 'yellow' in this listing summary means the label, in which case it should be in the notes not at the head where it implies yellow vinyl.
Danrad
This IS on yellow vinyl. See pictures. Your black vinyl version is a different version.
SadLendy
I just bought a gold (yellow) colored vinyl repressing of this today. It looks like an early 90's pressing with ATCO labels. The record store owner assured me it was not a bootleg, although I was suspicious.
Vetitc
Sounds like Captain Beefheart visiting New Orleans. This is a fusion of many styles, it's psychedelic but not psychedelic rock, more like psychedelic soul-jazz, a fairly laid back trip.
Clever
This album should definitely have Psychedelic Rock listed under style.
Faezahn
Maybe you had to be there, at the tail-end of the sixties, to appreciate the effect this had in the UK on those who were tuned-in and dropped-out. From the moment the needle drops into "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya", you can smell the joss-sticks. The body slips into a Robert Crumb-like 'Mr. Natural' pose, as the good Doctor takes over with his hoo-doo magic and aural potions "that'll cure all ya's ills...""Gris-Gris" is a delicious gumbo of ritualistic melodies, pidgen-Cajun vocals, incantations, Zydeco instrumentation and eerie percussion. What, in later years, Rebennack (aka Dr. John) would term his "Funknology". If you haven't heard Dr. John, then "Gris Gris" is a good place to start, before leaping into the more up-tempo and funky "In The Right Place".The seven tracks on "Gris-Gris" are all gems. The last, "I Walk On Guilded Splinters" (oft credited as 'Gilded') has been covered by a number of musicians, such as Marsha Hunt, Humble Pie, The Allman Brothers and Paul Weller. If you're looking for 1960's psychedelic magic and you're gonna stick a pin in an album to select, this one is pure voodoo...
