To celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of the most revered metal albums of all time, Metallica's 'Master of Puppets', the UK's Kerrang magazine put together a compilation of artists paying homage to said release. 'Remastered' is nothing to take too seriously. It's a mixed bag consisting of mostly average covers. Machine Head and Trivium, arguably the best two contributions to this release, do a great job with 'Battery' and 'Master of Puppets' respectively, but other than that the rest are pretty forgettable. Don't get me wrong, Mastodon do an okay enough version of 'Orion', and the much-hated Fightstar, reviled due to front man Charlie Simpson's days in pop-rock group Busted, surprisingly do a decent job with 'Leper Messiah', guitar solos and all, but neither of these songs are overly memorable. And all the others are pretty poor, especially where each band incorporates their own identity into the song, such as growling or double-bass drumming. Overall, Machine Head and Trivium are the only two tracks really worth a mention, and even then, neither of them surpass the originals. But then, they're not really meant to, are they?
