Fra Lippo Lippi's debut is an absolutely essential document of post punk/new wave. While you'd be hard pressed to explain how this record could possibly exist had Joy Division not laid a certain groundwork, this recording is by no means a pastiche and stands entirely on its own. Drawing from a limited palette of sounds, Fra Lippo Lippi exercises a precise combination of attention to fine detail, taste and restraint. The shadows and space they create become part of the music. On pillars of hypnotic repetition they hang little melodic motifs and atmosphere like wisps of smoke curling through a crystal lattice. Are the vocals in English, Norwegian, Hopelandic? I have no idea whatsoever (ok, to be honest you can pick out some English here and there). Consider the voice another set of timbres to flesh out the body of each song. Of course, mellow and shadowy post punk with muted, unintelligible vocals will not be to everyone's taste; nevertheless, I give this my highest recommendation, and hopefully anyone who has not heard this record will intuit if it's right for them based on my description. It's an enigmatic and iconic record you will return to again and again.

Actulally, I own the 2 versions of that Lp. What's funny between the two versions and their different covers is that the sound and the mastering is not fully the same. The "cranes version" has a much more clearer sound, very bright, well produced, with a lot of high frequencies. The green cover has a much more low sound (more bass, in fact) and that gives a more intriguing result. It has a mastering with less high frequencies, so it sounds colder than the other version. With a good stereo, you can compare and clearly see the differences...I think I prefer the green version, but everyone its taste and well let's admit the "cranes cover" looks lovelier.

I even thought that the subsequent records were made by a different band with the same name! I had found this record on a second-hand shop back in 1985 and I've been listening to it for a whole summer. Just a couple of days ago I could find it on Torrent.

Lovely album : ) I like the way the vocal is detached and soft , the melodies are interesting too , dreamy and ambiguous , they seem very tender and calm but at the same time there is always something nervous and intense about them.. Unfortunately it's the only album with that feeling, the later albums are much more commercial and boring.. I guess they needed money at that time but this album is still interesting and worth listening to
