Fascinating sensitive and poetic tonal arrangements that might have more in common with modern and/or Japanese painting techniques than any musical tradition. Although Coral Island for soprano and orchestra has familiar contemporary sounds and snippets, Takemitsu's imaginative command of (de-)composition and tone colour is stunning. Sounding like a bunch of loose (beach) sand at first, later on one realizes nothing is either in or out of place. It just is.Although less dynamic in nature but just as fascinating, Water Music and Vocalism Ai are two musique concrète pieces that complement Coral Island very well.
