The original Ramayana an epic poem attributed to the great Indian sage Valmiki was written in Sanskrit some four centuries before the birth of Christ. This classical language was unintelligible to the masses of India but the story of the birth and childhood of Rama, the abduction or apparent abduction of his wife Sita by Ravan, the demon King of Lanka and the conquest of the demons and recovery of Sita by Rama and his army of bears and monkeys has been retold with various adaptations and modifications in most languages and dialects of India.
