The Beatles
As documented, the largest crowd gathered to see The Beatles, was in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1964. 300.000 fans lined the streets en route to the city from the airport in a reception more befitting a president than a pop group - John's comment at the end of the interview: "You got to be aware around you, you might get shot."
