Interesting, this looks like an unofficial release, as not all band members gave permission to previous releases. This is identical to an earlier 3cd release, which included a live disc from the 1977 Flint show, which seems to be missing on this version. Great album though and the demos are worthwhile and of good quality.

Do the proper album tracks sound like they are from master analog tapes or is this release still the vinyl LP rip with the obvious, heavy, inner groove distortion on tracks 6 and 11(Rock n Roll Radio and Winner)? Any info appreciated!!

‘No-one seemed bothered by us using the name’ Michael Bruce shrugs when asked about the origins of the band’s name he formed with original Alice Cooper group members Dennis Dunaway and Neal Smith. The shrug is telling as Battle Axe is a much underrated album with a tragic story. When the Alice Cooper group decided to take a break in 1974 Cooper, Smith and Bruce started work on solo albums. Singer Alice Cooper’s Welcome To My Nightmare was the only successful solo album, which intervened with the original plan to get back together when all eggs had been laid. In an attempt to lure Cooper back, Bruce, Dunaway and Smith started planning Battle Axe in 1976 with Bob Dolin, keyboard road musician on previous Alice Cooper tours and guitarist Mike Marconi completing the line-up. When it became clear Cooper wasn’t ready to give up his successful solo career, the band christened themselves Billion Dollar Babies and finished the album with Bruce singing. And there were more drawbacks: a bad mastering job resulted in a skipping album that was withdrawn. The extravagant live show, including a Rollerblade-stage battle with ‘axe-guitars’, turned out to be so extravagantly expensive and impractical the band only performed it four times. Management and legal problems haunted the band. When Battle Axe was finally available disco ruled the airwaves and negative reviews finally pushed the band over the cliff. And so Battle Axe became a side note in the Alice Cooper history. As shame really as this tough rock album features some great material and playing.
