"Collectors of this all time classic by Deodato should note that the track "September 13" has been tampered with on many issues and reissues. If you grab the original 1st US pressing of the album, check out "September 13", time it with a stop watch and, most importantly, listen closely to the break. The track should clock in at around 5'56 and the break, nice funky drumming combined with congas, should last for about 30 seconds."I don't know if this is true exactly, perhaps someone else can confirm. It seems most (all?) original vinyl copies are 5:24 and the quadraphonic release is the issue that includes the full conga solo by Ray Barretto.

I have a few copies of the album myself, one of which is the 1st pressing and that one has the full break on it. Maybe if I have the time I’ll add to the notes for each version whether it has the long break or the shortened one.

Beware the 2013 Jap CD issue of this. I compared it to the Euro/USA remaster from 2001 and the 2013 release is awful. Such a rough noisey copy compared to the clean bright 2001 Mastering. Not sure where they took the copy from for the 2013 Japanese master but it is shameful. And you can pick up the 2001 European/USA version fir half the price!

Collectors of this all time classic by Deodato should note that the track "September 13" has been tampered with on many issues and reissues. If you grab the original 1st US pressing of the album, check out "September 13", time it with a stop watch and, most importantly, listen closely to the break. The track should clock in at around 5'56 and the break, nice funky drumming combined with congas, should last for about 30 seconds. Now, if you own any later issues or non-US reissues on vinyl, you will notice that the track "September 13" suddenly clocks in at around 5'24" (an amazing 32 second difference!) and you'll also notice that the break is basically edited down to, well, no break at all. Thankfully the Legacy reissue on CD (here) features the proper 5'56" version of "September 13" with that nice long drum break, but check what version of the album on vinyl you have, clock the track, listen to the break and see if your "September 13" has been edited down or not. Looking at the groove on your vinyl, it should be easy to 'see' the area of the break on the record and drop your needle right in front of it. In an instant you'll learn if you have the correct version with the long break, or the edited one. Just wanted to leave this here for those who are looking for "September 13" as a floorfiller for a jazzy/funky DJ-set played with vinyl. 'Cause that long break is most certainly the one thing that you can use to mix a transition to another cut during your set. At the same time, the true dancers in the club love that break. Look for it, check it and see what you have. That break, if you have it in the correct version, is a killer :)

Sorry, just saw your reply ;) I’ll check my copy soon and I’ll let you know!

Which one do you consider the original first press? Any matrix number we should look out for?

Seems the pics are incorrect here, this is CTI 6021 S1 , which is the promo version. Just to clear out some confusion for those of us looking through all the different versions and trying to match up label variations. I could be wrong...Who's to say....
Cemav
The S1 suffix does not directly imply a promo. :)
