Difficult to tell whether it's just this pressing or the production in general but the bass just sounds flat and compressed, in fact the dynamic range on the whole record is pretty non existent. Sprinkles' latest EP has opened my eyes a bit as to how bad some of these classic house reissues sound.

one theory that was proposed to me by a friend was; could it be that they license the tracks (and subsequently spend most of their budget on doing so) whilst going for the cheapest, crappy cuts and pressing?

Feeling the same here; no house punching bass, pretty flat, but still good tracks. Feels like an excellent house classic thats lost a little bit of its soul ;(

Could it be possible that this pressing is a Vinyl transfer and no DAT tapes exist? With that being said I will say out of the 5 or so copies I own all varying from different time periods of represses, the sound quality is pretty much dead on what you described on most if not all of them.
