I could suggest that Lets Go! signaled the necessity of the British Invasion, and in more ways than not, that’s a pretty good assumption. But consider this, before one can review or even understand the nature of this album, one must admit that the warm vintage receivers and tuners from the 60s’ and early 70’s were some of the finest pieces of equipment ever made. After admitting that, it’s an easy step to discover, as Dolton Records suggests, the immense beauty of “... Visual Sound Stereo.” And when you do-so, do it from the comfort of authentic leather Eames chair, because like some time-shifting magical gesture, you’ll instantly understand the nature of this release.Certainly there are fans of The Ventures who are gonna insist that the psychedelic and surf influenced releases are hands down the best, and count me among them ... albums that were filled with luster, sophistication, and visionary attitudes ... albums who’s mere cover art assured you of what was held within. Let’s Go!, their sixth release of 1963, is not one of The Ventures iconic albums. And while there’s a stiffness to several of the songs, and there are backing vocals, what this album represents is three things. 1st: It’s that point when what was young and hip grow older, and The Ventures, like so many others, made the decision to follow a path to the comfortable, unoffensive, well healed adults, and not for the visionary dreamers. 2nd: It’s the point where the musical world does seem to shift and move in serval directions, leaving presentations like this subject to ridicule, laugher, and obscurity. But 3rd: Regardless of what you know of the 60’s, Let’s Go! accurately represents those times ... this is the music that was so quintessentially mid 60’s. And to that end, Let’s Go! seems to have been created not so much for the beauty of the music, but for the beauty the analog tube equipment could produce, with those vintage Marantz, McIntosh, and Pioneer receivers sparkling the songs with a heretofore unheard of quality, brightness, and sense of visual presence. It’s a piece of history I’m glad I own ...
