Hip hop has always been a wild card, hard to pin down. We ve seen it grow from its infancy in the Bronx in the mid 70s, then on to its Old School phase (80's),then to its Golden Age (early 90's), giving way to its Diaspora stage (where it broke down into many pieces and scattered worldwide, into abstract, downtempo, conscious, hyphy, crunk, whatever!) and finally to its current era, where if I had to describe it, it would be in a two party system (like the American political system). One one side, we have complete sold out wanna be starlets, who could care less about artistry- they want money and fame -period; we can call this the Commercial/corporate hiphop - and on the side, we have basically Underground/indie hiphop - whose major distinction from the latter is the simple fact that this camp is more concerned with artistry over anything else . Wordsound came along and absolutely and clearly stake their territory in the artistry side of things, keeping things "subterrenean" , and for good reason. I have seen trends come and go in hiphop as many of us OG hiphop vets that have been here for a minute know, the good sticks around, the bad eventually washes away, even if their songs are on constant mandatory rotation on the radio and clubs- crap is crap. If you're a hiphop enthusiast, turn off your tv or radio, and dig into some crates and find stuff that really chatches your ear; for me Wordsound does that, straight up dope hip hop.
