DEAD-SHOT
TALES OF US sees Goldfrapp operating between the stripped down folk of SEVENTH TREE and the moody electronics of FELT MOUNTAIN. Building each track as a narrative around a name, this album sees the band engaging in poetic storytelling, from the delicate “Jo” to the quiet exploration of gender identity on “Annabel.” The folksiness blossoms fullest at the start of “Drew,” bolstered by thick strums of double bass, before it culminates in an orchestral fantasia. The general atmosphere of the album leans definitely towards the contemplative, though “Thea” brings in the refracted electronics and plodding percussion. But the acoustic guitar returns for the melancholy “Simone” and the lo-fi echoes and whistles of “Stranger.” The cinematics of “Laurel” evoke a foggy parting between two lovers, while the strumming of “Clay” ends the album on a hopeful note. Gorgeous.

There is some confusion over tracks 1 and 5 on these releases. See original UK versus US edition, the Hong Kong edition and the limited box set. Judging by track lengths and musician credits, I'd say JO is the shorter track with double bass loop, and ALVAR is the longer track with guitars and drums. That would mean the original UK/Europe CD tracks 1 and 5 were swapped (ALVAR as track 1, erroneously titled and credited as JO), and subsequent editions (US, box set) corrected to match the original credits. The track times for the Hong Kong edition should be confirmed, because they are now the same for 1 and 5.

The cover artwork really reminds me of Could This Be Heaven?.
