The first side of this tape opens with “Hate”, looped voice, noisy backdrop. Suddenly it shoots off in another direction altogether, becoming a thick, almost impenetrable fuzz machine throb over which can be discerned voice samples. A good piece of what I refer to as 'Trad’ Industrial. It splinters off in other directions for a brief break towards the end, resuming it’s dense rhythm after a handful of seconds. "Wrongful Death Suits” opens with spoken voice talking about the Supernatural while a clock ticks in the background. The music swells in on subtle slow waves while voices chatter on about corruption. “Stoburn” is a complex and loosely-structured percussive piece using what sounds like ‘found’ instruments (metal) combined with tymp sounds and at ambient feedback. While this may not sound brillIant on paper, let me assure you IT IS! If you sneaked this onto a remix of TEST DEPT's “Beating The Retreat”, claiming it to be a 'lost' track, your average reviewer would tell you it was worth buying the album for. "Cold, Dead Fingers” opens with spoken voice before settling into a 'structured' piece which seems almost random - a large white smack of drums keeping the beat while a morass of what sounds like gongs chime in carillons beneath. It collapses into a whirling mass of spoken voice. "Strain” is an odd loop of noises recorded in stereo, having a similar effort to "Red Nettles”, the VIRGIN PRUNES' track - although this is less biological. more machine logic. As with everything else by O.M.C., they do this damn well. “Black & White’’ the first track on side two opens with a voice saying "Voice Of America", what sounds like violins looping, another mass of voice and sound, then it settles into a loop of high sound (violin again) over which voices muffled by distance talk. "Chrome DNA ii" opens with what sounds like human or mechanical interpretation of birdsong looping around. It soon falls into a dense and dark rhythm as big as a house. It pulses along in a threatening way, as if determined to cause some kind of havoc. It concludes in a cloud of voice. "1000 Ugly" starts off with Radio Evangelist ramblings about human sacrifice The sound looping away in the background is minimal, loops of metal, hot dark rhythms etc. “Flourescent” opens like the approaching sound of a factory, while over the top metal percussion is played in a variety of styles while machine noise roars away in the background, rising almost to a scream. A rhythm, as played on plastic bones, clucks away in the background. “Comjunk" is a short piece for all you ‘Comminication Junkies’. The closing track is "Drop Circuit", a dark and ponderous piece of of echoing percussion with some decidedly clever stereo-effects. It’s minimal, but a decent way to finish off the album. This is surprisingly tunefuI, in a ‘ hidden‘ way - most of the actual ‘tune’ mixed far enough back to become audio wallpaper. But it’s there! With each release I hear from CHAINSAW, I become more and more impressed. I for one look forward to hearing OPERATION MIND CONTROL’s next release. Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
