I have recently acquired from a local second hand book / old records / 78rpm shop, an unusual pressing of this record. The label is mwm records MWM 1034 in morpeth northumberland. The sleeve notes are by a Frank Wappet who seems to have been an esteemed presenter on BBC newcastle radio. The notes indicate the record was released later than April 1986. They say that the record is the original recording made by Decca in 1957, at the Oxford Gallaries Dance Hall Newcastle on Tyne.Played on my good quality HIfi system, the sound quality and stereo imaging is quite excellent, especially as 1957 is very early for stereo recordings. I imagine it was made with a simple microphone set up, either a single left and a single right microphone. There may just be a hint of a centre microphone "spotlighting" the piano. As a convincing recreation of a spacious dance hall acoustic it is very good. The performance of George Evans Band is ultra smooth and in my opinion all numbers differ little in their arrangements. Each side, although separately numbered on the disc & sleeve note is a continuous arrangement with each of the twelve numbers segueing into each other. The disc is well worth acquiring though, in my own opinion

analogron Further to my posting of February 17 2018, I have discovered that the early Decca stereo had a mono recording made at the same time. Stereo records if my memory serves me right were only marketed in the UK from about mid 1958 so the original Decca release would be in mono, this is consistent with the LK series NO. for this recording. I now note that the MWM 1034 specimen I have has the word STEREO printed on the labels but does not appear on the sleeve copy. Also in the centre "land" round the label, a matrix number reading GRAMPIAN MWM 1034A ( side A ) or GRAMPIAN MWM 1034B ( sideB ) appears. I have added this note because I found a reference to Grampian Records elsewhere on this site.
