Although a compilation and not a true album, it essentially functions as one, though in all honesty if so I think it's their worst. Most of the tracks are in the range of moody vocal pieces which are very reminiscent of their first album; I love these pieces, I think they're great and worthy of having gotten on their albums.But then just about the rest of the compositions are lengthy instrumental pieces. As much as I enjoy their more experimental work, these tracks tend to feel meandering and thrown together; Jessamine has always had lo-fi recordings (I've heard better quality 3rd generation bootlegs) but these tracks are so muddy and poorly mixed that I can't enjoy them much at all, not to mention the music itself is full of really weak melodies and uninspired arrangements, their titles are the most interesting aspect, I think.But what really gets me about this, what really gets me fired up, is track 11, half a minute of silence. I thought maybe this was some sort of goofy quiet message or something, but you can amplify the recording as much as you want, you get nothing. I've always hated this stupid little gimmick of throwing false tracks on a CD, with maybe track 99 being the 'hidden' song, or simply throwing dead space in between two tracks, it's been done to death by now and people even today still seem to think they're clever. But the fact that they did this, even giving a description of this 29 SECOND PIECE OF BULLSHIT, just blows my patience. for this reason alone I took a star off. Call me over-dramatic, but I hope someone out there can sympathize with me.Anyway, all in all if you've discovered this band I would still recommend this compilation, though I think actually collecting the vinyls of these tracks would be funner (of course it would, vinyl rocks). The package is pretty neat too, I should add.
