The world premiere of The Pieta, with words and music by Shane Cullinan, took place on March 10, 2006. This powerful new oratorical work draws on images of the moment that Christ's lifeless body was placed in the arms of his mother. Cullinan depicts the raw emotions of a modern-day mother's response to her own son's death from violence on the streets of Manchester.
The work's main influence was *Michelangelo's marble statue, also called The Pieta, in the Vatican. It captures a key stage in the Passion of the Christ, the story of the last events of Christ's earthly life. The Pieta was first performed at St Paul's Covent Garden, which is the basis for this recording.
