From the Cold Spring Website: Coil | BackwardsAfter the ground-breaking release of 1990′s “Love’s Secret Domain” album, Coil were not dormant; the main project was “Backwards”, which was started in 1992, updated considerably between 1993 and 1995, and transferred in 1996 to New Orleans, where it was finished in the magic of the Nothing studios of Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails). The album saw the fruition of Jhonn Balance‘s recent vocal coaching, producing haunting, passionate vocals, while reaching new heights.23 years after its initiation, these tracks have been beautifully preserved by Danny Hyde and are finally available in highest quality audio. Differing substantially from the later, remixed incarnation, “The New Backwards” (2008), “Backwards” contains the original versions of Coil’s much-loved tracks; ‘A Cold Cell’ and ‘Fire Of The Mind’, which have appeared on various compilations over the years, and are now presented as originally intended. This album is the essential bridge between “LSD” and the later “Musick To Play In The Dark” series. It is an essential conduit, to understand the journey that was taken. It was to be released… it should have been released… but because of issues with grey men it wasn’t. It is now, so enjoy. (Danny Hyde).

Legally, I doubt it's a bootleg. Danny has made references to some sort of recording made for legal purposes. I doubt he'd lie about such things, and I doubt Cold Spring, having jumped through the hoops required to get "Uncoiled" released, would put out something without a reasonable guarantee that they were in the clear legally. So, calling this a bootleg is a bit suspect, at least from a legal perspective.Morally? I suspect that Sleazy would, at best, be ambivalent about Danny's release. I also suspect he'd be happy about anything Jon put out. Going off public statements, Jon strikes me as having a much stronger case for being the person to handle all the archival releases. (To be fair, I know Jon personally, so I am biased. I don't care. :) If the tables were turned, I'd gladly support Danny.) I have no doubt that Jon will pay everybody and won't keep a penny for himself. I also have no doubt that Danny, quite understandably, is trying to milk Coil fans for all they're worth while he can, which would explain why he's pissed about Jon's releases (i.e., he doesn't get the credit and, more importantly, he doesn't get to keep all the money). In that sense, I encourage people to skip the Cold Spring release and wait for Jon's, which I'd imagine will have the original demos in much higher quality and maybe some other tracks. That and much better artwork. (Hiring Cleopatra's old art staff wasn't a good idea. Sorry, Cold Spring.)

Jon Whitney was sour about this release so he calls it a bootleg... and he didn't give Danny Hyde / Cold Spring the album art. Danny Hyde was there for the recording process of this album, so in my opinion it's not a bootleg. I'm just really happy to have a chance to heart this!

'Excited' would be an understatement. Do us proud Danny!
