John Barry, Various - The Living Daylights (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) FLAC download

Found this in a south African record store for the price of R60 (about $4.20). An excellent album which indeed may lack a lot of the cues in the film but maintains to hold onto the most important ones which are the best. The only two essential tracks it misses out are "exercise at Gibraltar" and "Afghanistan plan".The albums title track which is sung by one of my fav pop groups of the 80s, holds strongly whilst it did meet itself with a mix critically. The album contains 2 songs by the pretenders which are forgettable but are still fun to listen to as a bond fan.The album was the first to be done electronically but it sounds great with its range of horns to the bond theme blasting its way through leaving behind a rousing listening experience. The best song other than the A-HA track has to be either "the sniper was a woman" or "Inflight flight". But even that is a close call as the others are great as well. The only song I half-dislike is "into Vienna" (which really isn't saying much) as the pretenders version with vocals makes for a much nicer listening experience.possibly the best bond soundtrack of the decade and probably right up their with my personal favourites. Well recommended for soundtrack lovers and ANY bond fan. I have the UK cassette but doesn't come close for the vinyl LP alternative when it comes to quality. Quick shout out to "A view to a kill: soundtrack" but that is a review for another day.Thanks

For his last Bond score John Barry decided to modernize his technique and delivers an exciting final note (pun intended) that perfectly blends classical and synth. Even 30 years on The Living Daylights still sounds fresh and new. Even a few cues of David Arnold's later scores are beginning to sound dated, but not John Barry.The rasping trumpets that are the signature of spy music, the Bond theme, and the ever-popular Bond chorus are all upfront (if you rearrange the album in chronological order) in the opening track "Exercise in Gibraltar" before a-ha's awesome title song, which might also be one the best Bond songs, even better than Skyfall. As much as I liked that song it did not have a melody that could be worked into action music. Even the secondary song "Where Has Everybody Gone" by The Pretenders is so freakin' cool and is used to great effect as theme for main henchman Necros. There's so much to like here.Barry scored 11 of the Bond movies yet had the talent to give each of them a unique theme, though he really spoils us here and this score has many highlights such as "Ice Chase", "Inflight Fight", and "Hercules Takes Off". That's not to say that other tracks don't have their smaller epic moments though.Since Barry's time we've had Kamen, Serra, Arnold, and Newman bring their own unique style to the series, with mixed results. I doubt anyone will ever break Barry's record though, and he has left his fingerprint ingrained into the DNA of the Bond sound forever.A must-have for Bond fans and film score collectors.
