This is basically a quasi-compilation: Released in '92, it features Ruth Joy's euro club hit of earlier that same year, "Feel", in addition to her 3 1989 tracks. The first of these is her funky and feisty "Don't push it" single; except here it is re-edited and re-titled as "Push it", as is "Gimme your love" ("Give me your love"). "GMYL" was the B-side to "DPI". "GMYL" is a hot and heavy 80s club track. Sounds dated, but still manages to rock somehow! :) Her "Soul Power" single was written, mixed and produced by Ruth herself. Lyrically it's positive and uplifing with a nice piano solo. "Fool's Paradise" is produced by Whole Hog productions, who also worked with Dannii Minogue, circa this era. It's perhaps the most 'poppy' track here; featuring a mini-rap in the middle too. "War" sees Miss Joy pair up with reggae outfit Aswad. The result is an intelligent, thoughtful and touching ballad about how "everywhere is war": a 'world peace ploy' track. "Keep Holding On" is produced by Nomad Soul, and has a unique sophisticated vibe and a funky beat. Again, this one is lyrically (and thematically) positive: GIRL POWER!! Saving the best till last,we have the 3 legendary Carl Mcintosh produced tracks. "Question of time" has gorgeous harmonies and cleverly mannages to be ethereal and sassy with a slow, funky beat, simultaneously. "Remind me" turns down the tempo somewhat and showcases Ruth Joy's unique vocals. "You bring me joy" is one my personal favourites. It has beautiful soft, dreamy music and light, whispery, vocals. The instrumental version is even better and it's inclusion here is testament to it's beautiful instrumental qualities. Ruth Joy (real name Ann Saunderson) would later work with Krush and Octave one, under her real name. I thoroughly recommed this album to fans of female soul/dance artists with a touch of distinction. This is not, however a wailikng Arethra Franklin type 'Soul' album; "Pride And Joy" excels in its largely minimalist and subtle approach. It is largely a gorgeous 'Chill-out' album by a versatile, talented diva. In places, Ruth Joy sounds similar to Cathy Dennis - though still retains her own style blatantly - CHECK THIS ONE OUT!
