If you enjoy Herbie Hancock's three albums featuring the Mwandishi band, that is Mwandishi, Crossings and Sextant, you need this album from Julian Priester, Love Love. This album was recorded just as the Mwandishi band had broke up and Herbie Hancock formed a new band and working on Headhunters, which found him in a more accessible funk-influenced fusion inspired by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Sly & the Family Stone. Seems like Hancock's former bandmate wanted to continue what Hancock did with the Mwandishi band and Love, Love proves that. While none of the other Mwandishi members are present, Patrick Gleeson (who was a guest on Crossings and Sextant) appears here. Other notable members include Bill Connors (Chick Corea/Return to Forever), Eric Gravatt (Weather Report), Bayete (Automatic Man, too many others to mention). The title track has a bit of that Weather Report thing going no surprise given the presence of Eric Gravatt. Repeating bass lines that include various trumpet, trombone and even guitar solos, some spacy synths from Patrick Gleeson, and Mellotron rearing its face from time to time in a manner not unlike Herbie Hancock's "Hidden Shadows" (off Sextant) although the music itself has a faster pace. The rest of the album is more amazing fusion that is far from mainstream, with some really intense playing from all around. While I enjoy Headhunters as much as the next person, it was too bad Herbie Hancock did not continue on with this more adventurous brand of avant garde fusion, it's nice to see Julian Priester kept that spirit going for this album, making this a requirement for those who enjoy Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band-era material.
