All I know is, I ain't complaining about this retro garage-throwback trend that's been going on as of late. "Done Me Wrong" hammers it home.

The dubstep trends were kind of unsettling and dissorienting, and were more so as years passed and no label could embrace all the styles that came out of it. While some stuck to the wobble, some others took an approach to drum n bass, many tried some things with mainstream pop and so on, the usual trend of recovering the uk-garage 2-step sound and many other oldschool tricks still reigned above them all. In 2011, indeed, everything sounded like 1991 all over again, or well, 91-94 to be honest, like all the uk producers (and uk crowd) were exorcising demons and realizing that those sounds were not always cheesy, but also good after all. This Mosca EP, published in the Jackmaster and Spencer's Numbers (the most active defenders of the style then), is maybe the most clear example of updating those sounds of the past without updating much. The hit-hats and keyboards sometimes sound like being directly sampled from Todd Edwards, and the vocal samples are treated in just the same style. Of course there are some tweaks, like the minimal melodic line, the more present basslines or the many production tricks that both tracks have, but this is pure uk garage sound. Of the two of them the winner was Bax, which sounded nearly everywhere and everytime in the summer of 2011 . That keyboard riff, those vocal samples, are inmediately catchy and addictive, and fits perfectly any speed garage classic you can think of. Baz is not only a good track: it makes the then-loathers of this sound dance it like the previous rejection never happened, and in my opinion still remains the best of the 2011 sub-style.

Risingson, that is a really decent review. I totally agree that producers like Mosca are reintroducing the 2 step sound (maybe dropping a bit of the cheesier element and focusing on the dubs). I'm glad you didn't slag the track off for being a copy of earlier records - it sounds completely fresh even with it influences undisguised. Now where's that groove chronicles 12 inch so I can have a little mix...
