Normally I'm not wild about the Village People; not because their music is bad or anything, it's just formulaic disco. Same structure to most of the songs, same rhythm in the lyrics, etc. But everytime I hear this song it stops me dead in my tracks. "Ready For The 80's" is like a six and a half minute time capsule of hope and happiness, when life wasn't easy for gay men and women, but we were finally starting to become accepted in the mainstream and (to paraphrase Timbuk 3) "the future was so bright we had to wear shades." That is, until the 80's actually arrived. And so did AIDS. I lost most of my friends from that time period to AIDS but not a single one of them ever truly lost that sense of hope and happiness to be alive...something that slipped away from me at some point after losing so many friends. Corny as it may sound, though, whenever I hear this song it lets me experience that almost childlike innocence and joy that they had again. And in that way I'm with my friends again. That's when i realize 'so what if the song sounds corny and outdated now?' That's the whole point.
