The vast majority of the so-called recommendations listed above my comment are genuinely terrible: the testosterone and gasoline fuelled swagger of Springsteen, the anodyne cocaine sheen of Rumours, the insipidity of Shakedown Street (in spite of Lowell George acting as a producer of sorts and believe me, with both Little Feat and Grateful Dead counting among my very favourite bands!), Huey Lewis and the News, blimey, The Police, Little Creatures by a band that five years before this record were among the biggest and hottest acts of 1980, Springsteen, Springsteen, Springsteen, Van Halen, Dark Side of the Moon, Michael Jackson . . . altogether a terrible selection interspersed with some genuinely good records such as Songs in the Key of Life, Desire, Pearl, Cheap Thrills, Abraxas, The Beatles, Dire Straits, it all makes you wonder, what inane algorithmic calculation could be responsible for compiling these er "recommendations". "Embraceable You" is a fantastic double LP, don't be misled by underestimating it, because only small sums of money are being charged for it. All four sides present a great selection of songs and stellar performances by everybody involved. Billie Holiday is in magnificent form and so are all her sidemen, only two different drummers and three bass players were employed in the course of these four sessions, all of them recorded in the brief span of 7 days in January 1957, the last ones the singer did for Verve Records. I do particularly dig Barney Kessel and Ben Webster. The songs are presented in chronological order and the liner notes are thorough. You even get genuine stereo versions of those songs that were not only recorded in genuine stereo, but where the stereo masters have survived as well (six of the altogether 19 tracks). Believe me, they sound fantastic. And should you die before having at least once heard the version of "Comes Love" (sadly only extant in mono!), you might experience damnation e.g. by having to listen to "A man needs a maid", "Billie Jean" , "Hungry Hearts", "Born in the USA" and "Every little thing she does is magic" in eternal replay. That may well be hell! Perhaps you have been asking for that then . . . If you complained, God could have the cheek to ask: "Would you like some U2 added? No problem. We can sort that out for you. Hang on, while I just check the recommendations on discogs."
