Notes

Many counterfeits exist. This is the genuine version of both the record and cover.

Presented on this album are Lennon's rough mixes of what became his "Rock & Roll" album. The release of this mail order album in January 1975 resulted in Lennon stepping up the process of releasing "Rock & Roll" a month later.

The following law suit was resolved in favor of Capitol Records and John Lennon. Production of this LP was halted and about 3000 copies survive.

There are the steps to see if your version is the original:
1) If any copy has the word GREATEST (instead of GREAT) printed on the spine-it's a fake.
2) Original covers are manufactured with white posterboard. If any copy has a paste on cover slicks-it's a fake...beware some counterfeits have copied the white posterboard construction.
3) On the cover,if you cannot see the pink flesh on John Lennon's shoulder-its a fake Many counterfeits use a slightly enlarged copy of the front cover which cuts out the shoulder.
4) If the letters in the word STEREO (in the bottom right corner of the cover) run together-its a fake. All originals have the word STEREO printed in separate letters.
5) On the back cover, the printing on the little album covers in the advertisment are legible, This is not to say they are perfectly clear because the print is really small. Every counterfeit that I have seen has the print absolutely unreadable.
6) If The record is unusually thick piece of vinyl-its a fake. Remember, original copies of this record were pressed in 1975, vinyl records were not pressed with the same heavy, thick vinyl as they were in the 1960's.
7) if the label on the record is unusually large compared to a standard 1970's pressing-its a fake. 8) If the trail off area of the record does not have a machine stamp BELL SOUND-its a fake. But beware some counterfeits do have BELL SOUND stamped in the dead wax.
9)There is one definitive thing that separates the originals from the fakes..All original copies have the matrix number of A 8018 pressed into Side 1 Label. No counterfeits have this feature.....This being said, this copy is an original and meets all the determining facts.....

Leave it to Adam VIII Ltd. to come up with one of the ugliest album covers I've seen. The red print, the yellow background, the old photo (even for 1975) of John Lennon. Can you say 'cheesy'? This is IT!While this album pales in the amount of counterfeits manufactured of the Beatles' Vee-Jay 'Introducing the Beatles', most copies of this album are fake. I was looking for this years ago, and decided not to invest in an item I would always have doubts about. The story behind this Lennon lp can be easily found on many sites on the web. Here is what I glean from the whole story....Lennon, I feel, did not 'steal' Chuck Berry's lyric. I'm sure 'Come Together' was written and the lines were used as a tribute to Chuck Berry (from his song 'You Can't Catch Me'). I don't think John was trying to get away with anything. At any rate, he didn't, as one Morris Levy, who owned the publishing rights to the song, took Lennon to court for his supposed plagiarism.Lennon made some agreement with Levy to record an album of songs for Adam VIII Ltd. Rumor has it Lennon was intrigued with mail order marketing. The story gets even more bizarre when Phil Spector shows up at sessions and shoots his pistol one night in the studio.Oh how the mighty have fallen! Lennon, once a Magical Beatle, is showing up on late night TV hustling albums a la Slim Whitman! Keep in mind, this was during John's drunken days in Hollywood, where he and Harry Nilsson (also drunk) were making fools of themselves. Lennon was seen walking around with a tampon taped to his forehead! Ha ha. Wretched excess, anyone? Lennon had broken up with Yoko and was hanging with May Pang at this time. The album contains fifteen songs (supposedly tracks were speeded up to get all of these tracks onto one album). The result is feast or famine. I rather like the way Lennon redid 'Be Bop A Lula'. But his interpretation of 'Do You Wanna Dance?' is unlistenable, with a terribly wrong ska beat given to a song best left alone. 'Angel Baby' is awash in horns and vocals, and it is plain silly to remake the flawed but strangely perfect masterpiece by Rosie and the Originals.I came across this on eBay recently and purchased it for two hundred bucks, only because the seller seemed very hip to the many aspects of the original packaging. Originals of this album are actually rarer than the infamous Beatles' 'butcher cover' from 'Yesterday and Today'. Plus, the record is in mint shape.Opdiner, this release's submitter, is correct on all points when determining whether the album is fake or real. The album is listed at $1,000 in Goldmine in mint shape. Taking advantage of the eternal rotten economy, I figured two hundred bucks was worth the price. Fans of the Beatles and John Lennon would enjoy reading the various stories posted on the internet about this strange release.Had Lennon had his head on straight, he might have regretted using Chuck Berry's lyrics at the end of the day. He certainly could have not foreseen what would happen in the future. To paraphrase Lennon: 'Life is what happens in between planning all of the things you are going to do.' Shit happens...and so does Morris Levy.

element-apart The REAL version - spine reads "John Lennon Sings the Great Rock & Roll Hits." The FAKE version spine reads "John Lennon Sings the Greatest Rock & Roll Hits. Then I must have the real version. "My" spine reads (all capitals) JOHN LENNON SINGS THE GREAT ROCK & ROLL HITSBut I doubt that I have an original, as I bought it somtimes in the 80ies or 90ies.Any other proofs ?
