MONTEFELTRO - IL TEMPO DI FAR LA FANTASIA (FGBG 4072.AR) CD 47mOf the new wave of Italian progressives, there have been numerous delights to behold: Ezra Winston's esoteric ANCIENT AFTERNOONS, Nuova Era's space-flight DOPO L'INFINITO, and Men Of Lake's debut amongst them. However, Musea have not really been so wise in their choice of such current acts. Men Of Lake was their masterstroke, Eris Pluvia were also a wise choice for their roster, and Montefeltro should delight even more people.A duo of Piergiorgio Ambrosi (keyboards) and Attilio Virgilio (vocals and guitars) they are also aided by a guest bassist and drummer. The simplicity of the instrumentation however, gives no clues to the music, in which a great deal of multi-tracking is used. Montefeltro, the duo, are exceptionally talented musicians, who weave a rich and tantilizingly beautiful music, full of complex acoustic and electric guitar lines, a keyboard section that includes various pianos, organs, string ensembles, synthesizers, etc. The music is set firmly in the old Italian classical-rock tradition, with lengthy instrumental sections, ethereal songs, great dynamics and arrangements. Notable comparisons that come to mind include: early P.F.M., Errata Corrige, Sensitive Immagine, Samadhi, or Le Orme circa STORIA O LEGENDA, and amidst their spacey concoction are hints of Steve Howe-like gentle guitar glissandi and keyboard arrangements that recall the early classic days of Genesis. The concoction is so well put together that, if it weren't for the slightly too clean sounding drums, you'd date it as being no later than 1976. A most enjoyable album. From my Musea reviews feature in Audion magazine #24 (Feb. 1993)
