Contains some different mixes with less echo effect, than heard on US version.

To whom it may concern! It should be noted that when buying the CD version of this fine compilation that 'Spicks and Specks' is only to be found on the Polydor -MMTCD 1600 1991 South Africa, and Ploydor - 831594-2 Australia versions. I discovered this to late to my regret when I purchased the cd version in a Record Store. I should have been more astute, as I really wanted this version of 'Spicks and Specks' For I remember first hearing it on the Vinyl Lp version UK RSO 29394113 I remember it had a most particular sound quality, in comparison to some of the trashed out (Cash In on) old Festival Australian Recordings compilations on many many other labels. For a collecter this is a must have classic addition as it is an Official Bee Gees compilation from that early period. Also I would like to respond to a comment made here previously saying the Bee Gees weakness was their Lyrics!? Sorry, but this is a rediculious comment. For the most part, The Bee Gees songs Lyrics are Classic, Timeless Profound, Transcendent, and Poetic.

A compilation of diverse psychedelic track, made before Bee Gees started their disco era. To be honest, I prefer them like they sing in these musics. It is not hard to make the link with the Beatles, as their voices are quite similar.I have to admit, this is not my favorite type of music. But sometimes it is good to go back to the roots, in the 60s, during an innovative decade.This record contains beautiful tracks, like "Holiday", "Massachusetts" and "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You". Moreover, the sound quality of this CD repress is pretty satisfying.

Many "best of" compilations are nothing more than one or two true "best of" songs and the rest is simply filler. Not so with this album. Each track is oustanding in its own way and all are excellent examples of pre-disco BeeGees at their finest vocally and possibly their musical creative peak as well. If one track has to be chosen as the standout, I would suggest it be "I've Gotta Get A Message To You". The entire song is a tour-de-force of songwriting and performing. The kicker comes at the finale when the modulation to a higher key allows Robin's voice to absolutely soar. If I were forced to point out a weakness in the BeeGees, it would have to be their lyrics, which can sometimes go past vague to the point of silly. A notable exception on this compilation is "Words" which shows a tender and mature side that defies how young the brothers were at the time. I consider this a must-have album for those who appreciate the pre-punk British Invasion, and one deserving of a place next to early Beatles, Stones, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Dave Clark Five.
