Notes

Silence Of The North is centred around improvised recordings from a late 1970s Yamaha grand piano. The album can be seen as an imaginary soundtrack inspired by the nature of the Northern Hemisphere. After around three hours of recording with the grand piano in the middle of the night, the material has been whittled down to around 30 pieces including a main theme which tells a story much like a movie. With the piano at the heart of everything, the sound is naturally cinematic and references colder climes. The main idea was to record an album that characterises silence and whilst the lonely old piano would evoke that alone, the added sound design featuring live played piano strings, cavernous noise and backing sounds delve further into the ideas of loneliness, isolation and silence. With its clear film soundtrack aesthetic, it would be all too easy to reference Modern Classical music – but it is pointed out that this is not a piano album because the instrument has been used to paint a picture with notes and noises. So it has more to do with Ambient music than Modern Classical.
