Notes
The first of ten sets of the History of Music in Sound, released as a companion to the New Oxford History of Music, published by Oxford University Press. The series was to span the history of music from the ancient and oriental sources in this first volume up through the "Modern" music of the 20th Century, ending in 1950. Originally published in 1957, it was reprinted in 1961. The recordings were released on HMV in the United Kingdom, and on RCA Victor in the United States.Also released as a 9-disc set of 78 RPM discs, tracking information provided in the accompanying booklet.
Uncredited individual tracks are referred to anonymously in the liner notes, for example "instrumental ensemble" or "male voice". Only those credited performers or ensembles from the companion booklet are cited, all others are labelled "Uncredited Performers".
