Sixteen Seconds is best heard in its full glory on the 12". Gordon Sharpe and Elizabeth playing with their voices and having the time of their lives is one of the many peaks of the 4AD pinnacles. The 12" then gives Song to the Siren a solid, weighty, space of 12" vinyl to be etched, preserved amd played in the best possible way.I love, this single: cover, B-side and all. But thinking about it, it is funny Song to the Siren wasn't re-released. The cover of a dark house at night is soooooo Gothic (fine as far as I am concerned). This could have been so much more main stream if it had a white cover and beautiful photograph of some dandelion fluff floating in the air of an endless summer day. 4AD always resisted that sort of thing . . .

I agree, sixteen day / gathering dust, is, both the original of Modern English, and the cover of This mortal coil. I think they could put it in "It'll end in tears", as they did with "song to sirens", would have raised even more, the beauty of the album, which I consider a masterpiece. The video that runs on You Tube, I do not know if it is the video, more or less official, is very nice, and spot on, the 4AD, never denied, their groups and their discography are fantastic

Lucifer Sam I half agree with you. The A side is easy to love. The B side of Sixteen Days is just as easy to love - a fiery contrast to the A side (and that's the whole point). Quirky and energetic it is such a powerful antidote (?). This is a 'duet'; between Elizabeth and her friend Gordon Sharpe - no finer couple in my opinion. The 12" version at its full length is the best. The early Eighties for 4AD were stunningly innovative. I'd pick Sixteen Seconds as being a kind of emblematic herald for the full canon of 4AD, There is something ominous in its sound which promises the unexpected.

What a wonderful, spheric version of this Tim Buckley song. Could anyone even sing it better than Tim? Yes. This Mortail Coil lifts this song to an even higher level than the original. A real siren song!Unfortunately the b-side doesn't fit at all to this beauty of song.

Couldn’t agree more! TMC’s Song To The Siren is such a beautiful version - perhaps my favourite song ever. However, like you, I wish the B-side had been another tune - even an instrumental version would have been more suitable.
